Life Sciences Grade 12: How to Answer 4-Mark and Essay Questions
How to structure 4-mark, 8-mark and 17-mark essay answers in NSC Life Sciences, with worked examples from human reproduction, evolution and DNA.
Life Sciences examiners give away roughly a third of the paper in extended-response questions — those big juicy 4, 8 and 17-mark chunks. Yet these are the questions where most learners under-score, because they treat them like short answers with more words. The truth is that examiners mark against a fixed rubric. The moment you understand the rubric you can double your essay mark almost overnight.
Understand what "mark" means in Life Sciences
For every mark awarded, the memo lists one specific fact or one specific phrase. A 4-mark short paragraph therefore needs at least four separate, correct, distinct facts. Repeating the same idea in slightly different words does not earn a second mark. Neither does a beautifully written sentence that contains one fact. The examiner is scanning your answer for ticks.
The 4-mark question: pack facts into short sentences
Break each 4-mark question into four one-sentence points, each with a subject and a verb. Do not write an introduction and do not summarise at the end. Every sentence must carry a fact.
Worked example: "Explain how the structure of a mitochondrion is suited to its function." (4 marks)
- The inner membrane is folded into cristae, which increases the surface area for oxidative phosphorylation. (1 mark)
- The matrix contains enzymes needed for the Krebs cycle. (1 mark)
- The double membrane creates a small intermembrane space where hydrogen ions can accumulate, driving ATP synthase. (1 mark)
- Mitochondria contain their own DNA and ribosomes, allowing them to produce some of their own proteins for respiration. (1 mark)
Four sentences, four facts, four ticks.
The 8-mark question: the structure-function-example trio
Eight-mark questions almost always want you to describe a process (2–3 marks), explain how a structural feature helps that process (2–3 marks), and give an example (2 marks). Structure your answer under three sub-headings — literally write STRUCTURE, FUNCTION and EXAMPLE — even though it is prose. The examiner ticks faster and cannot accidentally miss a mark.
The 17-mark essay: structure earns three free marks
The 17-mark essay is worth up to 15 marks for content plus 2 marks for logical presentation and 1 mark for coherence, depending on the year. That means 3 out of 17 marks are earned just for structuring the essay correctly, before a single fact is stated.
Follow this template every single time:
- Introduction (1 mark): state what the essay is about in one sentence. Do not restate the question.
- Body — thematic paragraphs. Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence. Every following sentence in the paragraph adds one fact. Move from process to structure to example.
- Conclusion (1 mark): one sentence linking the ideas together. Do not introduce new facts here.
- Coherence and presentation (1 mark): paragraphs must flow, spelling and biological terms must be correct.
Do not attempt more than 15 content marks. The DBE memo lists 20 or more possible marks but caps the score at 15 — you get credit only for the first 15 correct facts in the order they appear. Prioritise the highest-value facts first.
Language matters: use the CAPS terminology
The memo will accept "chromosome" but will not accept "chromosome-like structure". It will accept "gene" but not "unit of heredity". Every subject in Life Sciences has a vocabulary set — meiosis has "homologous", "crossing over", "chiasmata", "diploid", "haploid"; genetics has "phenotype", "genotype", "heterozygous", "homozygous". Write these terms directly and spell them correctly.
Diagrams inside essays
If the question mentions a diagram or table, draw it. Marks are almost always allocated to labelled diagrams. A diagram of the nephron with the correct labels for Bowman's capsule, proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct is worth five marks in itself. The diagram does not have to be a work of art; it has to be labelled clearly.
Common essay topics and how to prepare for them
The DBE cycles through the same big topics every three years. For 2026 study the following essay families:
- Meiosis and its significance.
- DNA structure and protein synthesis (transcription and translation).
- Evolution by natural selection with a South African example (e.g. peppered moth or antibiotic resistance).
- Human reproduction: menstrual cycle, hormonal control.
- Homeostasis: thermoregulation, osmoregulation, blood glucose control.
- Nervous system reflex arcs.
- The eye and how it accommodates and adjusts to light intensity.
Write one full essay from each family in the four weeks before the exam. Time yourself: 25 minutes per essay including a planning sketch. Mark yourself against the official memo. If you scored under 12 out of 17, redo the essay the next day without looking at your first attempt.
The final mark-earning move: proofread
Life Sciences has the ugliest spelling of any matric subject. Words like "cytoplasm", "chlorophyll", "spermatogenesis", "photosynthesis" and "vasoconstriction" trip up learners under time pressure. Leave three minutes at the end of the paper to reread your essays and fix spellings and grammar. That habit alone lifts many learners from a level 5 to a level 6.
