Geography Grade 12: How to Read a Topographical Map and Ace Paper 2

How to read topographical maps, orthophotos and GIS layers for the NSC Geography Grade 12 Paper 2, including calculations and skills.

NSC Geography Paper 2 is a map-skills paper. It rewards a small number of well-drilled skills — reading grid references, doing calculations from the map, interpreting orthophotos, and analysing GIS layers. Because the skills are limited, this paper is easier to score high marks in than Paper 1, provided you practise deliberately.

Know the map before you enter the exam

Every NSC Paper 2 comes with a printed 1:50 000 topographical map extract and an orthophoto at 1:10 000. The topographical map's key is standard and does not change year to year. Print an old topographical map from our past papers page and study the key until every symbol is memorised: national road, main road, secondary road, railway with number of tracks, contour line, trigonometric station, spot height, non-perennial river, dam, marsh, kraal, quarry, cemetery, place of worship.

Similarly, learn the six-figure grid reference system. The first three digits are the easting (west to east) and the last three are the northing (south to north). Point your finger at three examples on any map and check the answers.

Calculations you must be able to do without looking anything up

The following six calculations account for roughly 30 marks in every Paper 2:

1. Distance from map to actual. Measure the distance on the map in millimetres (or centimetres) with a ruler or string. Multiply by the scale: at 1:50 000, 1 cm on the map is 500 m in reality, so a distance of 6.4 cm equals 3.2 km.

2. Area on the map. Measure length and width in km using the method above, then multiply. Areas are often written as km$^2$.

3. Gradient. Vertical distance (difference between two contour lines) divided by horizontal distance (measured on the map, converted to metres). Express as $1 : x$ where $x$ is the number obtained. Steep gradients are 1:5; gentle gradients are 1:100 or more.

4. Bearing. True bearing is measured clockwise from north (0°). Magnetic bearing = true bearing + magnetic declination. Read the year's declination and annual change from the bottom of the map and calculate.

5. Speed, distance and time. Speed = distance / time. Convert units. If a car covers 3.2 km in 4 minutes, that is 3.2 / (4/60) = 48 km/h.

6. Vertical exaggeration on a cross-section. VE = vertical scale / horizontal scale. Always express as a ratio.

Cross-section drawing

The examiner may ask you to draw a cross-section between two points. Follow the routine: (1) place the edge of a paper strip along the line and mark every contour crossing; (2) transfer the marks to graph paper with a horizontal scale identical to the map and a chosen vertical scale (label both); (3) plot heights; (4) draw a smooth line connecting the points; (5) label major features (rivers, hills, roads).

Practise cross-sections until you can produce one in under ten minutes.

Photograph interpretation

The orthophoto is a vertical aerial photograph laid over the map. Learn to identify features on it and to relate a photographed feature to its symbol on the topographical map. The examiner often asks: "Identify feature X on the orthophoto (grid reference given) and name its use." Answer in one sentence.

Oblique photographs, when included, help you identify vegetation, landforms and land use. Look at colour and pattern: bright green in a semi-arid area usually means irrigation; a checkerboard pattern is cultivated fields; a dark patch is a plantation.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

GIS questions carry between 10 and 15 marks. Learn the vocabulary: raster (pixels), vector (points, lines, polygons), attribute data (the information linked to a feature), spatial data (the location itself), buffering (a zone around a feature), overlay (combining layers), remote sensing (data captured from satellite or aircraft), resolution (pixel size).

Typical questions include: "Give two advantages of GIS to a municipality" (planning, service delivery, disaster management, land-use monitoring — one sentence per point) and "Explain how overlaying a soil map and a rainfall map helps a farmer" (analysing which portion of the farm receives enough rainfall on suitable soil).

Physical geography content

Paper 2 also draws on Grade 12 climatology and geomorphology. Match the map to the topic. If a river valley is shown, expect questions on drainage patterns (dendritic, radial, trellised, rectangular), river profiles, or rejuvenation. If a plateau is shown, expect questions on inselbergs, ridges, or scarp retreat. If a coastal area is shown, expect wave-cut platforms, tombolos or lagoons.

Cross-reference the physical features on the map with vocabulary from CAPS: watershed, drainage basin, gorge, meander, ox-bow lake, delta, floodplain, dolerite dyke, syncline, anticline, pediment.

Human geography content

Rural and urban settlement questions appear in every paper. Identify the settlement type (isolated, dispersed, nucleated, linear, T-shape) and the site factors (water supply, defensive position, resources, transport). For urban areas, identify functional zones (CBD, industrial, residential — high, middle, low income; transition zone, rural-urban fringe), and give evidence from the map or photograph.

A four-week plan

Week 1: calculations and cross-sections. Week 2: orthophoto and photograph interpretation. Week 3: GIS and physical features. Week 4: full past papers under timed conditions.

Do the calculations first in every past paper you attempt — they are the highest reward for the lowest effort. Then work through the interpretation questions using the map key.

Geography Paper 2 is passable in the sense of "40%" for a learner who never opens a map, and comfortably in the 80–90% band for a learner who spends four hours a week on the past papers. Choose your outcome.
