Business Studies Grade 12: Structuring Essays that Score Full Marks

Business Studies matrics regularly score 90+ percent on essays without being naturally strong writers. The reason is simple: examiners award marks against a fixed rubric with visible sections. If you deliver the rubric in the right order, the marks come. This guide shows you exactly how to structure a 40-mark essay so nothing is left on the table.

The 40-mark essay rubric explained

Every 40-mark essay is broken down like this:

• Introduction — 2 marks
• Body — 32 marks
• Conclusion — 2 marks
• LASO (Layout, Analysis, Synthesis, Originality) — 4 marks

The body 32 marks are further split by the sub-topics named in the question. Read the question carefully and note how many sub-topics are asked for; that tells you the mark split. For example, "Discuss the impact of BBBEE elements and evaluate its impact on businesses" tells you there are two sections in the body: elements (usually 16 marks) and impact (usually 16 marks).

The introduction: three sentences, two marks

Do not restate the question. Do not tell a story. In three sentences: (1) define the key term the question uses; (2) explain briefly why the topic matters to business; (3) state what the essay will cover. Example: "Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) is government legislation aimed at redistributing wealth to previously disadvantaged South Africans. It plays a critical role in redressing past inequalities and improving business sustainability. This essay will discuss the five BBBEE elements and evaluate their impact on businesses."

The body: sub-headings save marks

Use sub-headings that match the question. If the question has two parts, use two sub-headings. Under each sub-heading, list the points with bullet-style prose. Every point should be one to three sentences and cover a distinct idea.

The standard body point structure is IEE:

• Identify — state the point clearly.
• Explain — a sentence describing what the point means or how it works.
• Example — a South African example wherever possible.

Worked example — a body point in the BBBEE essay:

"Ownership. This element measures the percentage of a business owned by black shareholders. Businesses receive BBBEE points for having at least 25% + 1 black ownership. For example, MTN issued a share scheme allowing black South Africans to become shareholders through the MTN Zakhele initiative."

That is three IEE marks (identify + explain + example). Deliver five or six such points per sub-heading and you hit 16 marks per section.

The conclusion: two sentences, two marks

Summarise the main argument in one sentence and give a forward-looking statement in the second. Example: "In conclusion, BBBEE plays a vital role in transforming ownership, employment and enterprise development in South Africa. If businesses embrace the elements strategically, they can improve their scorecard while contributing to sustainable economic transformation."

LASO: four marks that most learners miss

LASO stands for Layout, Analysis, Synthesis and Originality. The marks are awarded like this:

• Layout (1 mark) — you used an intro, body and conclusion, and the body has clear sub-headings.
• Analysis (1 mark) — you did not just describe; you explained relationships and consequences. Words like "because", "therefore", "leads to" and "as a result" prove analysis.
• Synthesis (1 mark) — you combined information from different sub-topics or linked business functions together. In a BBBEE essay, mentioning that skills development also improves human resources planning is synthesis.
• Originality (1 mark) — your own examples, current events, or a personal insight. Referencing a recent South African news story earns this mark almost every time.

Deliberately engineer one sentence into each essay that scores each mark. Highlight the sentence with an asterisk if you must, to remind yourself to include it.

The most common Grade 12 essay topics

The DBE tests a predictable rotation of topics. Prepare a plan for each:

• BBBEE (five elements and impact).
• Human resources function (recruitment, selection, employment contracts, induction, salary determination and fringe benefits).
• Business functions (general management, purchasing, production, marketing, financial, human resources, administration, public relations).
• Insurance (compulsory vs non-compulsory, key concepts, over- and under-insurance).
• Investment (JSE, unit trusts, RSA retail bonds, shares, calculating simple and compound interest returns).
• Business strategies (Porter's Five Forces, SWOT, PESTLE, defensive/retrenchment strategies).
• Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Social Investment.
• Team performance (stages of team development, criteria for successful teams, conflict management).
• Presentations (planning, delivery, visual aids, handling questions).

Prepare a one-page skeleton for each topic with the intro definition, five to six body points per sub-topic, and a stock conclusion. When the exam gives you a specific question, you flesh out the skeleton on the fly.

Timing

You have three hours for a 300-mark paper. Roughly one minute per mark plus 20 minutes reading and planning time. A 40-mark essay should take 40 minutes: five minutes to plan, thirty-two minutes to write, three minutes to check for the LASO marks. Do not exceed this. Two shorter essays finished are worth much more than one long essay abandoned.

Practice, mark, rewrite

Write three essays a week for the month before the exam. Mark each one against the official memo. Where the memo lists a point you missed, write it into a spare notebook. On the morning of the exam, skim the notebook. Ten minutes of revision on your own gap list is worth an hour of new reading.
